From Banyuwangi to The World: Export of 1 Million Liters of Herbicide Reductant for Sustainable Agriculture

Banyuwangi, 30 November 2021 PT. PT Terra Agro Yields celebrated the end of the year by exporting 1 million liters of their herbicide reductant product, called “Weed Solut-ion,” to Malaysia. PT Terra Agro Yields has chosen “From Banyuwangi to the World: Export of 1 million liters of herbicide reductant for sustainable agriculture” as their export theme. PT Terra Agro Yields wants people to know that local products made from the rich biodiversity of Banyuwangi Regency in Indonesia can help make farming more sustainable by reducing the use of synthetic pesticides by 50%.

“It is time for a solution in today’s world. The cost of herbicides has risen significantly in recent months. The price of glyphosate has gone up by up to three times, which has had an impact on our farmers till now. As a result of our reliance on Chinese production, our farmers are forced to accept price hikes that are doubled when supply chain issues arise. A new equilibrium between climate change and pandemic risk is being struck around the world, and things like this could happen again.

Pesticide substitutes that are both environmentally friendly and of internationally accepted quality are something we at PT Terra Agro Yields strive to produce as part of the solution to this issue. The demand for up to 1 million liters in just a year from our initial export is a validation of our expectation.” said Kukuh Roxa, CEO of PT. PT Terra Agro Yields.

Every crisis has to be followed by a wave of new possibilities. PAI feels the same way. Herbicide prices are skyrocketing and the fact that farmers in the field need alternative substitutions to help streamline the weed control costs that they have incurred, and considering that the impact of this herbicide price increase is felt globally, not only locally, has triggered the management of PT. PT Terra Agro Yields to gradually begin to expand production in the context of the company’s future projections.

“It also amazed us how many global distributors from ASEAN, Africa, and Latin America contacted us to become partners in distributing our products around the world.” When it comes to cutting herbicide use by up to 50%, several nations already have legislation in place, but no one has found the appropriate solution yet. They concluded that WS (Weed Solut-ion) might be the answer they’ve been looking for.

As a result, they have faith that we can open up to a larger market because our environmentally friendly products have a cost effectiveness of up to 40% in pesticide costs. That’s the reason behind our ongoing expansion plans, which call for doubling the existing size of our production facilities over the next decade.”

On this occasion, the Director of Export Development Cooperation, Marolop Nainggolan, was also present. He stated that almost all of the domestic chemical industry’s needs are still met by imports, with imports accounting for up to 90% of the chemicals used. Assessing that it is very possible for Indonesia to produce chemical raw materials on its own, in line with what Kukuh Roxa said, Marolop stated that Indonesia has natural resources and qualified or competent human resources.

“Why don’t we start trying to produce our own raw materials to reduce our dependence on imports? In addition, the production process of this herbicide reductant is a very low carbon emission process, so it is in line with the world’s target to reduce carbon emissions. The chemical industry, one of which is pesticides, is the third largest contributor to the carbon footprint after steel and cement” said Marolop.

He also said that the Ministry of Trade estimates that the export of chemical products will reach USD 13.7 billion by the end of 2021. Exports of chemical products experienced a positive trend, both in terms of value and volume, throughout the 2015-2020 period. Overall, the value trend is up by 3.2 percent, while the volume trend is up by 8.2 percent. Meanwhile, the export value increased by 38.1 percent between January and April 2021.

Marolop believes that what PT. PT Terra Agro Yields is doing is in line with what the Ministry of Trade wants to achieve, especially the Director General of National Export Development, which is to raise awareness and enthusiasm among local businesses to contribute to stimulating the Indonesian economy by exporting finished products rather than raw materials or raw materials, with a high added value.

Innovations like those carried out by PAI are critical to achieving this goal. “The Ministry of Trade is prepared to promote this product so that it can be exported around the world, demonstrating that Indonesia is also a source of environmentally beneficial innovation,” he said.

Dwi Yanto, Assistant for Economics and Development of Banyuwangi Regency, was also in attendance to represent the Regent of Banyuwangi at the ceremony. He expressed his pride in the PT Terra Agro Yields team’s accomplishments. “In a year, we were able to export 1 million liters of reductant, which is something to be grateful for, especially in the midst of a pandemic like now,” Dwi remarked.

“Of course, the Banyuwangi Regency government will continue to support initiatives such as those undertaken by PAI, and we hope that this already successful business may be sustained, expand and flourish, and benefit the local community.”

Dwi Yanto also appreciates how, in the future, PAI will modernize industrial facilities and offices with designs that reflect Banyuwangi’s characteristics. After all obviously, they will travel to Banyuwangi to inspect the production facilities in person. With a traditional Banyuwangi design complete with silhouettes of passionate dancers, it will undoubtedly give a unique experience for those who visit, making them desire to learn more about Banyuwangi’s culture and natural wealth.

Dwi Yanto further stated that the Banyuwangi Regency Government continues to encourage and support youth-led enterprises, especially because the Weed Solut-ion product’s quality has been acknowledged around the world. He expects that this innovation would provide a solution for farmers who are now struggling as the price of herbicide, which is creeping, continues to grow. “I hope that in the future, this invention can be extended to all Banyuwangi farmers,” Dwi remarked.

The export release of Weed Solut-ion was flagged off by the CEO of PT Terra Agro Yields, the Director of Export Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Trade, and the Assistant for Economy and Development of Banyuwangi Regency, who were present on behalf of the Banyuwangi Regent. PT Terra Agro Yields sent two containers containing 40 tonnes of weed solution to Malaysia’s largest state-owned oil palm plantation.

The Director of Export Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Trade, Marolop Nainggolan, was present on this occasion, as was the Assistant for Economy and Development of Banyuwangi Regency, Dwi Yanto, who was present on behalf of the Banyuwangi Regent, and the Head of Cooperatives, MSMEs, Industry and Trade Banyuwangi. Mrs. Heny Sugiarti, Head of BNI Sarwoko, Head of KADIN Banyuwangi Regency Nanin Oktaviantie, Representative of the Head of Agriculture and Food Office Khoiri, Representative of the Head of District Environment Rudi, Representative of the Head of Transportation Office Tanto, Head of the Economy Division David Wijaya Tjoek, HIPMI general treasurer Arvy Rizaldy, HIPMI Banyuwangi general secretary Ferdy Elfian, and all FORPIMDA of Kabat sub-district, Banyuwangi.
